90th Air Force Day of India

Here are some facts about the Indian Air Force and the Air Force Day.

The Indian Air Force was established on 8th October 1932 as the Indian wing of the Royal Air Force (RAF).

The first squadron was 6 Indian officers under a British officer. It was raised in January 1933 in Karachi.

They had four Westland Wapiti IIA army co-operation biplanes.

Today is the 90th Air Force Day.

The Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF) became the Indian Air Force (IAF) in January 1950.

The Paramveer Chakra, the highest gallantry medal for war time action in India, has been received by one Air Force officer – Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon (after the 1971 war).

A former IAF pilot is the only Indian citizen to have travelled in space – Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma.

The motto of the Air Force – नभ: स्पृशं दीप्तम् means Touch the Sky with Glory.

The Indian Air Force is the 4th largest Air Force in the world.

Its most recent acquisition was the Light Combat Helicopter.

Today’s celebrations were at the Chandigarh Air Force Base.
