5 new countries join Security Council as non permanent members

Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland were elected to the UN Security Council as non-permanent members for the 2023-2024 term and will replace India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway at the horse-shoe table from January 1 next year.

The elections were held on 9th June, 2022 and the results declared shortly after.

Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, and the UAE are the other non-permanent members of the Security Council.

With this, the 2023-24 composition of the UN Security Council is as under:
