From December 2nd, 2022, to January 7, 2023, European Shipping saw three major cyber-attacks – one of them, ironically, on a company that provides, among other things, cyber security solutions to shipping companies.
December 2nd: Voyager worldwide (Singapore)
Voyager is a Singapore based company that provides tech solutions to the shipping industry.
The company announced on December 2nd that it was the victim of a ransomware attack and was trying to find a solution.
Since December 2, all systems have been taken offline (meaning, the company is working without computers).
Voyager has more than 1000 clients around the world.
December 25: Lisbon Port
On Christmas Day, Portugal’s largest port – Lisbon (Lisbon is the capital of Portugal), shared that it was the victim of a ransomware attack. The group “Lockbit” has claimed responsibility for this attack.
Various news websites reported that the website of the port was not functioning on January 4th – 10 days after the attack.
At this time, the website is up and functional.
7 January: DNV (Norway)
DNV, a Norway based company, has confirmed that its software – ShipManager – that provides shipping management solutions to companies, was the victim of a ransomware attack.
This has affected 70 companies and 1000 ships worldwide.
This attack is unresolved at the time of writing this report.
