Kimberly, Feb 23: Australian scientists have discovered the country’s oldest known rock art, a 17,300-year-old painting of a kangaroo. The artwork, measuring 2 metres was painted in red ochre on the sloping ceiling of a rock shelter, in Western Australia’s Kimberly region. Its age was determined by radiocarbon-dating ancient mud wasp nests. This is a significant find which provides insights into the world these ancient artists lived in. Also, this art is similar to the ones found in South East Asia, suggesting a cultural link between people of that era.
An artwork from Indonesia, the painting of a wild pig dating back 45,000 years, is so far the oldest in the world.
