10 things to know about Vikram -S: India’s first privately built rocket

So far, India’s space program has been managed by ISRO – Indian Space Research Organisation.

Today, for the first time, a rocket developed by a private company – a start-up at that, was successfully launched by ISRO. Skyroot Aerospace took two years to build this rocket. It has 3D printed components and has a carbon core.

The rocket, named Vikram-S, needed to reach an altitude of 80 kms from Earth. 80 kms is considered the start of space. The project was named Prarambh (Prarambh means beginning).

The rocket reached 89.5 kms at 147.1 seconds after takeoff. It was launched from the Satish Dhawan Launch pad at Sriharikota, India.

It is remarkable that the very first space mission of Skyroot Aerospace was successful.
