‘Living Building Systems’ used to construct the building – Report by Preetinkar Jain
Changsha City, June 21: A China based real estate company, Broad Group constructed a 10-storey residential building in Changsha City, China in 28 hours and 45 minutes. The technology used here is known as prefabrication construction system or ‘Living Building System’. It works by assembling modular units (factory made units, designed with standardised dimensions for easy assembly and repair) which are manufactured offsite in advance. The prefabricated (built from parts) apartments are the size of a standard shipping container that have grooves for bolts to fit in. The entire building is erected by tightening the bolts. Once the building is erected the electrical and water supply is connected.
Each building module has the same dimension as a shipping container, this makes transport by water and land easy as no separate container is required. Stainless steel B-Core slabs are used to provide structural support in the buildings. They are 10 times lighter and 100 times stronger than other conventional support used in the buildings. These slabs are mega earthquake and typhoon resistant. These houses are easy to install and dismantle, and can be shifted anywhere. The interior design of these apartments is also quite eye- catching.
In 2015, Broad group accomplished a ‘speed build challenge’ by constructing a 57 storey building using the prefabricated construction system in 19 days.
